Police are calling on the public to help them track down a woman who robbed an 84-year-old as he left a Perry Barr supermarket.
The elderly man had just left a shop on Wellington Road at 3pm on Friday, May 30 when the incident happened. Officers have been investigating the incident for some weeks and today officers have released CCTV in an attempt to catch the culprit.
Police investigating the crime say the woman caught the man off guard after approaching him and striking up a conversation as he walked to a nearby bus stop.
She then grabbed him and searched his pockets. Although the elderly man put up a struggle the woman managed to steal his wallet containing £155 cash and his bank cards before running away. The man tried to give chase but was unable to catch up with the thief.
The robber is described as a black woman aged 20-30, of stocky build and wearing a black head dress and tartan patterned jacket.
"This was an unprovoked attack on a vulnerable elderly man while he was trying to go about his daily business,” said DC Rhiannon Daff. “The attack caused him great distress and undermined his feeling of personal safety.
"The robbery happened in a busy shopping area in a bus stop and we believe someone saw this incident or will recognise the woman involved."
Anyone with information should contact police on 101.
