NOW what a barrel of laughs that was. It was like Bottom and Fawlty Towers rolled into one!

The legendary playwright, Ray Cooney OBE, once again nailed down a witty and wonderful production complete with a cast that had Brummies in the audience brimming with laughter.

There was a late change, too, with the masterly Rik Mayall-like Jeffrey Harmer replacing Andrew Hall as Richard Willey, Prime Minister Theresa May's right-hand man who had high hopes of an evening schmoozing the ravishingly racy Jane Worthington, a Labour secretary played by the stunning Susie Amy (Chardonnay in Footballers' Wives).

And what started out as the perfect night in with chilled Champagne and oysters soon snowballed into utter chaos with the discovery of a body – executed brilliantly by David Warwick – trapped in the hotel's only unreliable sash window.

Instead of calling the police, a panicky Mr Willey attempts to cover it up and enlisted upon the help of his hapless private secretary George Pigden (Barry Evans from Eastenders) who was truly hilarious.

A special mention must also go to James Holmes who played The Westminster Hotel's cheeky and scruffy waiter, who was always on hand if you tipped him more than a few quid.

The story was a classic cat and mouse affair, brilliantly orchestrated by Mr Willey who, in essence, made it up as he went along in a bid to get out with his reputation – and relationship – still intact.

You had it all, too, with catastrophe after catastrophe being covered up at every given opportunity, much to the delight of the audience at The Alex.

If you're in need of cheering up or fancy a right good laugh then this is the show for you. Tickets are priced between £12 and £36.50 which, given the talent on display, is a right old bargain!

Ray Cooney's Out of Order is at the New Alexandra Theatre every night this week, with the last production on Saturday, April 15 (7.30pm).

Afternoon shows, which commence at 2.30pm, are on Wednesday (April 12) and Saturday (April 15).
